The virtual interview with Markle was what The 19th* – a nonprofit media that focuses on gender and politics – had organized has the final event in its 2020 Virtual Summit. Organization founder and current CEO Emily Ramshaw was the interviewer.

Markle said that as a former actress herself, she was not unfamiliar with the practices of the media. However, she said that she has gotten to better understand the nature of journalism during her time as royalty. According to her, the problem is that the media focused too much on the juicy details.

The former star of ‘Suits’ emphasized that salacity brings in the reporters, making them neglect the humanity and empathy during the process. She also talked about how there exists a large market for merely drawing in attention, rather than focusing on journalistic integrity.

This is far from the first instance in which the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have lamented about the way the media has treated them. Just recently, an unauthorized biography of the two titled “Finding Freedom” was published.

The important word in the description is that it was unauthorized – neither Harry nor Meghan was interviewed for the book. The authors argued that they had crawled enough information by asking nearly 100 sources who were familiar or close with the now publicly retired royalty.

In what can be perceived as a slight nod to the book, Markle said she has seen how much weight a single headline from a single unidentified source can have on the public. She drew a distinction between the clickbait headlines and truthful journalism.

Markle talked highly of The 19th* as an alternative to the various other media sources. Saying that she has sensed a change in what readers want from an article, the Duchess said reliable sources such as The 19th can hopefully provide factual and constructive articles to readers.
