US President Donald Trump is set to make his first-ever state visit to the United Kingdom in early June but it appears one member of the Royal Family won’t be there to welcome him. Fox News reported that Meghan Markle, also known now as the Royal Duchess of Sussex, will not be present when Trump will have lunch with the Royal Family, an event scheduled way in advance.
Trump has not commented on Markle’s expected absence but she is a well-known critic of the President.
The President’s official schedule was released to the public and shows that the First Couple will arrive on the morning of June 3. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, The Prince of Wales, and The Duchess of Cornwall will honor them with a Ceremonial Welcome at The Buckingham Palace Garden. A private lunch with the Queen will follow afterward, something that Duke of Sussex is rumored will be attending.

While many have assumed that Markle’s maternity leave is a likely reason for not attending, it’s no secret that she holds no love for Trump. Markle recently gave birth on May 6 to Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. The boy holds the distinction of being the first biracial royal baby who is half-American, having an American mother and British father. In terms of succession, he is seventh in line to the British throne.
With Markle’s obvious disdain for Trump, she may have snubbed him even if she hadn’t been on maternity leave.
Markle voiced her support for Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton during the 2016 Presidential elections, saying, “I’m voting for Hillary Clinton, not because she is a woman, but because Trump has made it easy to see that you don’t really want that kind of world that he’s painting.” She has also described Trump as “divisive” and “misogynistic” when she was interviewed on The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore.
While Markle’s dislike of the US President may be high profile, she is by no means alone in her sentiment.point 214 |
Several protests are being planned once Trump lands, just like the time he made his first trip to the UK as President.point 97 | The same orange Trump blimp that was evident during that first visit will be expected to make another appearance with the appropriate permissions likely to be granted again.point 243 | 1
Max Wakefield, one of those who will participate in the protests, said, “Why pick on Trump? He is the most powerful bully in the world. His power is built on division and about trashing the rights of some of the most vulnerable communities. So for us particularly as people here in the UK, which has a close relationship with the US, he is absolutely public enemy number one.”
