After seeing cases of people who had marks similar to chickenpox on their feet before testing positive for coronavirus, a team of Spanish experts is now making further investigations.

According to the Spanish General Council of Officials Podiatrist Colleges, foot lesions could be a warning sign of coronavirus. The professional body said in a statement that ‘numerous cases’ where patients had marks on their feet had been found in Spain, Italy, and France.

It was a ‘curious finding’ that has been noticed by both podiatrists and dermatologists.

The marks have been found ‘especially’ in children and teens with coronavirus but some adults have also shown this symptom.

The statement read: “They are purple lesions (very similar to those of chickenpox, measles or chilblains) which usually appear on the toes and normally heal without leaving a mark.”

It continued: “The Podologists Council urges its colleges and its members to remain alert because this can be a sign of detection of Covid-19 to avoid infection.”

According to local media, if the relation between coronavirus and the marks is prove, this can serve as a warning sign of the infection.

“Obviously, due to the short time we still cannot speak of scientific evidence,” the council said.

The International Federation of Podologists reported one of the cases of the symptom after a 13-year-old boy developed lesions on March 8.

At first, they thought the marks were caused by a recluse spider bite but the boy later showed symptoms of coronavirus.

Doctors checked the medical history of his family and found his mother and sister had a cough, fever, and breathing difficulties six days before he developed the lesions.

In an interview with The Sun, Dr. Sarah Javis, the Clinical Director of Patientaccess.com, said: “We know that many infections are linked to a higher risk of clots inside various blood vessels.

“It’s possible these foot signs come about because of clots blocking the blood supply of small blood vessels in the feet.”

She added: “It may also be something else entirely – we don’t yet know, but you can be sure that the scientists will be looking to find out.”
