A man from Maryland called in pest control for what was supposed to be a simple bed bug problem but turned out to be a massive infestation lurking in the man’s sofa cushions.
Rory McCarty, the 50-year-old owner of Bug Boys Pest Control and the one who went to the house came upon the grim scene pretty quickly.
The homeowner had complained about a bed bug problem but didn’t realize just how massive the infestation was until McCarty checked the owner’s sofa.

In the video footage, the pest control guy exposed all the insects that had concentrated in the cracks. In the dirt that had accumulated, clumps of the orange critters could be seen.
After being hidden in the folds of the fabric for so long, the sudden light sent the tiny insects scuttling.
Because they’re about the size of an apple seed, these critters can easily hide in many objects around a bed, not just on the bed itself. You’re at greater risk of coming into contact with bed bugs in places where a lot of people sleep through like hospitals, hotels, or homeless shelters.
While they haven’t been known to spread disease, their bites are irritating and they spread quite fast. The only time you’ll need to see a doctor is if you experience allergic reactions from their bites. If you encounter bed bugs at home, it’s best to call a professional exterminator as the Maryland homeowner did.
It doesn’t matter if your house is clean or dirty, the bugs look for a warm host and plenty of hiding spots. This is why if you travel often, make sure to look out for signs of bed bugs at home.
Prevention is still the best policy. For instance, before bringing home any second-hand items, make sure to inspect them carefully, especially bedding items and upholstered furniture. And if you’re staying at a hotel, inspect the mattress seams if there is any bedbug excrement. Instead of placing your luggage on the floor, place them on tables or dressers.
