Charles McKinney and Yvette McKinney were enjoying the rain at their home in Ackworth, West Yorkshire when they noticed a massive blister appear in their back garden which took half an hour to fully form.
After the rain stopped, the couple investigated the massive lump in their back garden.
They decided to pop it by standing on it but it didn’t work. Mr. McKinney, who is an IT consultant, then used a garden fork to open a hole to release the trapped water.
His wife filmed the bizarre moment Mr. McKinney popped the blister.
Mrs. McKinney said: “We’ve lived in our house for three years now but we’ve never seen anything like it happen before. Charles and I were so confused as to what was happening, but it was actually our son Edward (13) who told us casually that it was a lawn blister.”
“We’d never heard of them, but we googled it and sure enough, our clever teenager was right. Boys being boys, Charles couldn’t help himself and just had to pop it. It was all very entertaining and bizarre so I decided to film it and see if anyone else had had something similar.”
“It’s never happened here before but I’ll be intrigued to see if it happens again.”
The bizarre video of the massive blister was posted online and it instantly went viral, receiving thousands of comments.
One user wrote: ‘Compaction of the soil creates this, no grass root development below, I recall huge blisters like this on a golf course I worked on all due to the original course builders using heavy machines to landscape the ground’ while another user wrote: ‘We call them ogres belly. A lot of golf courses get them’
Lawn blisters often appear when water gets trapped underneath the grass after a severe rain.
