A mayor of a small town in Alabama has submitted his resignation letter after coming under scrutiny for making a series of controversial comments on Facebook.
Mark Chambers, the mayor of Carbon Hill, has come under fire following a series of comments he made about the Black Lives Matter movement.
In one of his initial posts, Chambers revealed he’s selling photos of coach Nick Saban and his Alabama football team because he couldn’t see eye to eye with their “sorry a** political views.”
The mayor’s decision to get rid of the team’s photos followed shortly after Alabama Crimson Tide’s Alex Leatherwood expressed that “all lives can’t matter until black lives matter.”
In another controversial comment that sparked fury among the people, Chambers wrote: “When you put black lives before all lives they can kiss my a**.”
According to The Daily Mountain Eagle, the mayor has another Facebook account that he used to share a graphic suggesting that “all lives matter” and that “Jesus died for us all.”
Previously, in 2019, the mayor of the town with just over 2,000 residents faced a backlash after complaining about homosexuals, transvestites, socialists, and ‘baby killers’ in one of his social media posts.
He later added in the comment section that “the only way to change it would be to kill the problem out” in a response to his friend’s comment that suggested the minority has more rights than the majority.
Following his comments, Chambers initially denied posting them whereas he later admitted writing them but insisted they were meant to be kept private. The following day, he also apologized for “embarrassing” his city in a lengthy Facebook post.
“Although I believe my comment was taken out of context and was not targeting the LGBTQ community, I know that it was wrong to say anyone should be kill,” Chambers wrote.
“I am truly sorry that I have embarrassed our City, I love this City and while in office I have done everything in my power to make this a better place for our families.”
