A McDonald’s customer just wanted to show his support for his favorite fast food restaurant when he showed up in a cardboard box car at a re-opened drive-thru.
57-year-old Lee Watson decided to build his own vehicle and ‘drove’ to the drive-thru instead of queueing up for hours.
Mr. Watson hoped that his creation would also give other diners a reason to smile as they wait for a long time.
But after 30 minutes, the fast-food restaurant refused to serve him, and the 57-year-old left empty-handed.
In an interview with Teesside Live, Mr. Watson said: “They wouldn’t serve me. Why is that? Because my car doesn’t have an engine?”
Mr. Watson explained that he came up with the hilarious idea after hearing that McDonald’s was reopening for drive-thru and McDelivery. He thought his cardboard box car would be a great way to cheer people up as they wait for their turn.
“I just fancied a bit of craic and to get some scran,” Mr. Watson shared. “I came into work this morning, saw the people queuing up – I thought ‘there’s got to be an angle to get in here quicker’. So we made a car.”
“We thought we’d get in the queue, have a bit of a laugh and lighten the mood up because life is a bit serious at the moment. I was a little bit disappointed, after queuing for half an hour, that I didn’t get any food. I never brought any bait in.”
He added: “So that’s me on fingernails and crisps again.”
A spokesperson for McDonald’s said: “It’s great that our customers are so excited to get back to using our drive-thrus, and we are aware there have been some very creative attempts to access our lanes.
“However, for everyone’s safety, we absolutely cannot serve people who are not in road-going motor vehicles, and we would ask customers to refrain from attempting to use the drive-thru lane in any other manner.”
