A branch of McDonald’s in Leicester was temporarily turned over to a private health company which then repurposed the restaurant as a drive-thru coronavirus testing center.
The restaurant closed to customers in March due to the coronavirus outbreak and last week, DHU Healthcare began testing key workers at the site.
A McDonald’s spokesperson said: “Last week McDonald’s handed over the use of its Meridian Business Park Drive-Thru in Leicester for use by DHU Healthcare for Covid-19 testing for NHS workers.
“Despite restaurants remaining closed, employees and franchisees have continued serving their local communities and supporting national organizations, helping those that need it the most.”
The fast-food chain also responded to recent rumors going around the Internet that claimed restaurants were going to reopen in May.
The chain announced on social media that there are “no confirmed reopening plans at this time” to reopen by May.
The McDonald’s UK Twitter account posted on April 24: “Well, our notifications are going wild tonight – we miss you too. We promise we will update you here as soon as we have confirmed our plans. Stay safe, stay at home and we will see you soon.”
Looks like people will need to wait a little bit longer to satisfy those Big Mac cravings.
Fortunately, KFC appears to have taken up some of the slack with 21 of its restaurants reopening across the UK. There is only a limited menu, however, and only takeaway service is available.
A KFC spokesperson further said that there were plans to reopen additional restaurants over the next few weeks as long as it was safe to do so.
The following KFC restaurants have reopened:
- Heaton Chapel – Stockport
- Tamworth
- New Oscott – Birmingham
- Manchester – Hulme
