If the latest report is anything to go by, a total of sixty people including a total of 53 medical professionals are charged in illegal opioid prescribing scheme running around five states and this involves prescriptions for over 32 million pain pills.
Among the defendants charged, there was a doctor allegedly traded prescriptions for the sexual favors. Another doctor prescribed opioids which led to the overdose death.
More to add, there was a dentist unnecessarily pulling teeth from the patients for justifying in giving them the opioids. This is what the sources claim.
A total of seven pharmacists, 31 doctors, & eight nurses were charged in this scheme which involved a total of 350,000 prescriptions that are illegal.
According to sources, the indictments were the aftermath of four-month investigations which has been led by the FARPOSF.
The defendants spanned eleven federal districts in Kentucky, Alabama, Ohio, Louisiana, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. And as far as the Justice Department of Health &Human Services claim is concerned, it is announced on Wednesday in the press conference that was held in Cincinnati.
The defendants face some charges which also include dispensing of the controlled substances by the medical professional as well as the healthcare frauds and unlawful distributions of the same.
While on the other hand, many also face counts and a minimum of one doctor has been charged in connection with the death which is caused by the opioids.
Sources claim that an assistant attorney general, Brian Benczkowski, also termed these pills as the equivalent of at least one opioid dose for each child, woman, and man in the region’s five states targeted.
He also stated that if these professionals go on behaving like drug dealers, the department would also consider them in treating like drug dealers.
According to the indictment, a pharmacy in Dayton, Ohio had prescribed over 1.75million opioid pills between October 2015 and October 2017 – earning it the nefarious title of a ‘pill mill’, according to CBS.
According to what the sources suggest, a doctor in Tennessee’s Western District called himself ‘Rock Doc’, and then he allegedly exchanged the opioids as well as benzodiazepines with the patients in return for some sexual desires. For more information on this front, keep watching this space.
