Meghan Markle has been lambasted online after using her royal title “the Duchess of Sussex” in a political letter in the United States.
On Wednesday, Meghan, 40, sent the letter to Charles Schumer, the Majority Leader of the US Senate, and Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the US House of Representatives.
According to the Daily Star, the letter is campaigning for paid parental leave.
The 40-year-old revealed in the letter that she and Prince Harry felt “overwhelmed” after their daughter’s birth in June while balancing child care with their working lives, the Express reported.
However, royal fans are outraged on social media.
Fans argued that it is highly inappropriate that Meghan still uses her royal title following the Sussexes’ dramatic exit from the Royal Family last year, and because of the letter’s political nature.
“Why is she using her title in America to make a political point?” one Twitter user asked.
“‘The Duchess of Sussex’ campaigning politically – both sound ridiculous in America 2021 and highly inappropriate for a British royal,” another one added. “(I’d have no problem with her letter if she wasn’t trading on that title!)”
It is worth noting that the Sussexes continue to use their royal public profiles for causes which they deem worthy of support.
Meghan’s letter, in partnership with the campaign group, Paid Leave For All, is the latest cause the Sussexes are pursuing.
Earlier this month, Prince Harry and Meghan announced they had become “impact partners” with Ethic, a sustainable investment firm on Wall Street.
“We believe it’s time for more people to have a seat at the table when decisions are made that impact everyone,” the royal couple said in a statement. “We want to rethink the nature of investing to help solve the global issues we all face.”
“Our partnership with Ethic is one of the ways we put our values in action,” they added.
Before partnering with Ethic, Prince Harry and Meghan went on a three-day tour of New York City, where they met US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield.
They are believed to have discussed racial justice, mental health issues, and the coronavirus pandemic.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have continued to use their titles after they stepped down to their royal duties.
However, Prince Harry and Meghan are not allowed to use the HRH titles (His or Her Royal Highness), which they have not used since last year.
