Back in January 2018, Meghan Markle deleted her personal Instagram account after she announced her engagement to Prince Harry.

But according to insiders, the Duchess had maintained a secret account afterward to still connect with her close friends.

“Since she shut down her public Instagram, she’d had a fake account to follow her friends,” a source told The Sun Online.

The sources claimed that the Duchess of Sussex reportedly deleted her secret Instagram account because people were just too ruthless.

“There was some really vile stuff written by social media trolls and obviously she also saw the headlines about her,” the insider said.

All the criticism from troll commenters made her feel “isolated and alone” to the extent that the Duchess worried for her safety as well.

“It really got to her and, in the end, she had to shut down that account too, to protect her mental health,” the source explained. “She felt very isolated and alone.”

As a member of the British royal family, Meghan is not allowed to have any type of unsupervised social media presence of their own.

The Royals are expected to have their days occupied with work rather than browsing Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

Back when Meghan was just a regular actress from California, she had and used Instagram regularly. In fact, it was the now-deleted Instagram post that hinted to her followers that she and Prince Harry were dating.

Shortly after Prince Harry and Meghan announced their engagement, she deleted all of her social media accounts.

Most Royals aren’t permitted to have Instagram, except Princess Eugenie, and Princess Beatrice.

The reason could be that the two don’t have formal working roles within the royal family, People magazine reported.

Princess Eugenie, for example, works as an associate director at an art gallery.

Meanwhile, Prince Harry, Prince William, and their wives carry out official royal duties for the palace.
