The first lady was booed by middle and high school students as she spoke about the battle with opioid addiction during Youth Summit in Baltimore.
Melania Trump was booed for about a minute when she entered the stage and again when she finished her speech.
Middle and high school students also talked loudly over her as she addressed them, resulting in Melania Trump to momentarily paused her remarks with a ‘hello.’
“Thank you for the warm introduction and for inviting me to join you today for such an important event centered on opioid awareness,” she started even though boos lingered.
It was in July this year when President Trump criticized Baltimore, calling the area where the late Rep. Elijah Cummings lived as a place where “no human being would want to live.”
The first lady was speaking at the B’More Youth Summit on Opioid Awareness, sponsored by Mark Wahlberg’s youth foundation and the Drug Enforcement Agency.
She waved and smiled at the crowd as they booed her. Over 2,500 middle and high school students were supposed to participate in the biggest youth summit on opioid awareness in Baltimore but only half attended.
“We are here today to raise awareness of the opioid epidemic in our country and to educate young lives on how to live a drug-free life. Addiction and drug abuse are universal issues– they do not discriminate based on income, age, race or where you live,” Melania Trump said.
A few students responded ‘hi’ when she greeted them and there were some cheers when she walked on the stage.
“I’m in this fight with you and I’m fighting for you,” the first lady said. She also wished them ‘Happy Thanksgiving’ before leaving the stage.
“Wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving. May God Bless you, your families and the United States of America,” she said.
More boos were heard when she left the stage.
