The two men who were pretending to be veterans have been ordered to wear a placard that reads “I AM A LIAR” while standing each Veterans Day and Memorial Day for 8 hours.
In addition, Judge Greg Pinski ordered 28-year-old Ryan Patrick Morris and 33-year-old Troy Allan Nelson to write down the names of 6,756 Americans who got killed while serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The punishment follows after both defendants alleged that they have served in the military in an attempt to have their existing cases moved to the Veterans Court.
According to The Great Falls Tribune, the two men, who were jailed for separate crimes, won’t be allowed to request for parole unless they finish the assignments handed over by the judge.
Troy Nelson was sentenced to 5 years in prison for drug possession, while Ryan Morris got 10 years for violating his probation agreement after being jailed for burglary.
On top of wearing the shaming placard and writing down the names of deceased soldiers, the inmates will also have to write obituaries for 40 Montana soldiers that were killed while serving. They will also be required to write and send personalized letters to multiple veteran groups and apologize for pretending to be one of them for their own selfish reasons.
Speaking of the order to pay respects to fallen soldiers, Judge Pinski told the two men they should stand on Veterans Day and Memorial Day for eight hours on a yearly basis while wearing a placard that reads: “I am a liar. I am not a veteran. I stole valor. I have dishonored all veterans.”
“I want to make sure that my message is received loud and clear by these two defendants,” the judge said.
“There are certain people — shameful people — who have not put their lives on the line for this country who portray themselves as having done so.”
