Responding to a suit filed about unequal pays of men and women soccer teams, US Soccer gave a statement in the court, saying: “The job of a [men’s national team player] carries more responsibility within US Soccer than the job of a [women’s national team] player.
”
During the debate at the court regarding the lawsuit about equal pay, the lawyers for US Women’s National Team employer argued that female players have lesser skills and that they work less hard than men.
The court filing was started by US Soccer to justify the wage difference between male and female players and to nullify the notion that the agency was gender-biased when it comes to paying the athletes.
According to the court documents submitted regarding the equal pay lawsuit, which was a hot national topic last summer following the fourth World Cup win of the US Women National Team, the US Soccer lawyers made a point that “the job of a [men’s national team player] carries more responsibility within US Soccer than the job of a [women’s national team] player.”
Furthermore, the US Soccer lawyers explained their notion saying that there were fundamental biological differences between the both, proven by “indisputable science,” and that the female team should be paid less because their male counterparts “require a higher level of skill.”
The Soccer federation’s lawyers went as far as grilling the national team stars, the likes of Alex Morgan and Carli Lloyd, that they were not as strong and agile as the male players.
According to the documents filed last month, you can see a US Soccer lawyer asking Lloyd: “Do you think that the team could be competitive against the senior men’s national team?”
Lloyd replied: “I’m not sure, shall we fight it out to see who wins and then we get paid more?”
During the proceedings of the case, a lawyer from the organization asked Morgan: “Do you think it requires more skill to play for the US Men’s National Team than the US Women’s National Team?”
Morgan responded, saying: “No, it’s a different skill.”
To ascertain their claim, US Soccer told the court that the men’s team players regularly have to face unfriendly fans even on home ground. According to them, this is one of the reasons why the men’s team has to work harder and face more challenges than the female team.
They also established before the worthy court that the men’s team matches against chronic rivals like Mexico attract more spectators and hence earn more money.
As of now, the hearing is delayed till May and the US women team is asking for $67 million to compensate for the financial losses they incurred due to their employer’s violation of the Equal Pay Act.
