Most of us have a pretty laid back view when it comes to spending our free time. After all, the free time we have represents a well-deserved reprieve from the stresses of work or even home responsibilities. Whether we spend our free time binge-watching on Netflix, playing with our kids, or simply sitting back to read a book, one thing is for sure, we don’t want our free time to go to waste.

For Tom Otto and Shaun Sears, though, they have a different idea of what represents a worthwhile use of their free time. That’s because they use their spare time performing dangerous missions to save cats who are stuck in trees, and all of this they do for free.

The pair are both cat lovers (obviously) and work at Canopy Cat Rescue, a non-profit organization founded in 2009 that works on a “donation only” basis. From here you can see Otto’s and Sears’ dedication because they’re not in it to make big bucks.

Their website says: “Any time, day or night, in all kinds of weather.” Their mission is simple: to help cats and the people who own them whenever and wherever they’re needed.

Both Otto and Sears are certified arborists and that means they are experts at climbing trees. This specific skill set has definitely been put to good use rescuing cats who tend to get stuck on trees! And if you’re in Woodinville, Washington, and have a cat stuck up a tree, you’re in luck.

In one video, Sears said: “We’re in touch with our cat side.” He added that what sets them apart from other tree climbers is their love of cats. Otto said that what they do has even made him “love cats even more.”

Canopy Cat Rescue was only a small operation when it started with only a couple of rescue calls each month. But “business” has boomed, so to speak, with the pair saying that a busy month will have as close to 70 rescues.

But they always make sure that each rescue is treated as if they were rescuing their own cats. There’s a certain level of satisfaction at using their ability to climb high trees for those who can’t.

“Giving the cat back to the family, they’re just so thankful,” Otto said. “A lot of times there’s hugs, tears. It’s that kind of stuff that is really rewarding for us to keep doing what we do.”

For sure, people have been very happy with the service they provide. One glowing review on Facebook went: “They are very patient, and love doing what they do!” Nicole Christiansen wrote. “I have total respect for them! Highly recommend them!”

While another, by Michelle Turner, read: “They are nice and just simply amazing. I would absolutely recommend this company to ANYONE and EVERYONE. 5 stars isn’t enough.”

Every city definitely deserves something like Canopy Cat Rescue. Hopefully, more expert tree climbers get inspired to start their own rescue efforts!
