Using metal straws reduces the use of plastic straws to a great extent.
These days, in order to be eco-friendly, a lot of glass tumblers are coming with a metal straw. But metal straws can be fatal. You may ask how?
A 60-years-old English woman, Elena Struthers-Gardner, was in her house with her wife, Mandy Struthers-Gardner. Elena was a retired jockey and due to a horse-riding incident, she collapsed or fell regularly.
Nothing was unusual about the day, not even Elena holding her mason jar drinking tumbler with a 10-inch metal straw in its screw-top lid, until Mandy heard strange noises.
After hearing those sounds in the kitchen, Mandy went to the kitchen door to check. Although she did not hear falling sound, she saw Elena lying between the den and the kitchen, at the front doorway who was making very unusual gurgling sounds.
The glass tumbler was lying intact on the floor. While one end of the straw was inside the tumbler, the other was sticking to Elena’s eye.
The metal straw stuck so deep inside Elena’s left eye that it pierced her brain passing through her eye socket. As a result, she suffered a traumatic brain injury.
She couldn’t sustain the injury, and she died. Even though she was rushed to Southampton General Hospital, she couldn’t be saved.
This unfortunate incident took place in Broadstone, The U.K. on 22nd November last year. The incident has left Mandy extremely lonely. Mandy confessed that she misses her wife, Elena.
Who would have thought that a metal straw can cause fatal injuries? According to coroner’s assistant, Brendan Allen, it is possible to obtain a serious injury if someone falls on the straw and it is pointed wrongly.
Therefore, one should always be aware of all these little yet extremely harmful incidents.
