According to the authorities, Mexico is now considering shutting down the border with the United States in order to prevent the spreading of coronavirus into the country.
While discussions related to closing the US-Mexico border normally take side on the American soil, Mexican authorities have now confirmed that the border could be closed from their side.
With over 2,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the States and just under twenty in Mexico, the authorities have expressed concerns and suggested the Americans could bring the killer bug into the country.
“Mexico wouldn’t bring the virus to the United States, rather the United States would bring it here. The possible flow of coronavirus would come from the north to the south,” health minister Hugo Lopez-Gatell insisted during a conference.
“If it were technically necessary, we would consider mechanisms of restriction or stronger surveillance.”
While US President Donald Trump didn’t say much on the topic of coronavirus in Mexico, he previously boasted of “a very strong border policy” that ensured a ‘low’ number of deaths.
“To this point, and because we have had a very strong border policy, we have had 40 deaths related to CoronaVirus. If we had weak or open borders, that number would be many times higher!” Trump tweeted.
Meanwhile, the US has suspended all travel from 26 European countries as Europe became the new epicenter of coronavirus outbreak. Joining the travel ban list were later also the UK and Ireland.
