Trump’s former first national security adviser Michal Flynn seemingly suggests a coup similar to Myanmar should happen in the US.
In the past months, QAnon and other Trump-supporting online websites celebrated the lethal military coup in Myanmar, suggesting that the same should happen in the US so that Trump could be reinstated as President.
On Sunday, Flynn made the comments at an event in Dallas that was attended by the supporters of QAnon and the Big Lie.
One member of the audience, who identified himself as a Marine asked Flynn: “I want to know why what happened in Myanmar (sic)can’t happen here?”
To which Flynn responded: “No reason, I mean, it should happen here. No reason. That’s right”.
On Monday, Flynn posted a message on Parler saying that his words had been twisted and made it clear that he was not calling for a coup.
According to Attorney Sidney Powell —who has represented Flynn in the past— he had in no way encouraged “any act of violence or any military insurrection.”
Powell said that the media had twisted Flynn’s comments, and did not explain why he had answered the question the way he did.
CNN reported that Powell was present at a meeting in the White House in the closing weeks of Trump’s presidency, during which Flynn suggested that the former president could invoke martial law as part of his efforts to overturn the election.
It wasn’t clear if Trump backed the idea, but others in the room forcefully pushed back and shot it down, CNN reported.
Several QAnon followers are obsessed with the idea that the US military will somehow put Trump back into office. CNN reports. While others hoped and believe that Trump would declare martial law on Inauguration Day to stop the now-President Joe Biden from entering the White House.
Earlier in the weekend, Flynn falsely claimed that Donald Trump won the election.
”Trump won,” Flynn spoke to the audiences in the event Dallas. “He won the popular vote, and he won the Electoral College vote.”
