Michelle Obama has revealed why she doesn’t want to run for office during her recent tour to promote her memoir, Becoming.
Speaking to Gayle King, the editor-at-large of The Oprah Magazine, at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta on Saturday, May 11, the former First Lady opened up about why she doesn’t want to run for president.
In addition to that, Michelle also spoke of her memoir, her husband Barack Obama, her undergoing marriage counseling, and the 2020 presidential election, according to HuffPost.
When Gayle asked Michelle if she’d ever run for office, the 55-year-old responded with a resounding “No” just like Oprah Winfrey, the owner and producer of O.
“Here’s the thing: People have to want to be in politics,” Michelle said.
“It has to be their passion. It’s not just because y’all like them. Like Oprah, she’s nice, she’s got a great TV show, so she should be president. That’s not how it works. We did that.”
The audience burst into laughter and applause with Michelle’s last sentence, since it was presumably a jibe at the incumbent president, who used to host The Apprentice on NBC.
However, the former First lady at once said her statement was not targeted at Trump.
“Being president is hard and it’s dangerous because there are no easy answers to any of this stuff. It requires intelligence and it requires understanding history,” she said.
Michelle added that taking care of her girls, Sasha and Malia, was also one of the reasons.
“You’ve got to have the temperament and patience,” she said.
“As a mother what you do not understand, if you’re asking me to run, is the toll it takes on the people around the president. It is a heavy ask.
“My children are graceful, wonderful, and they are champions to have made it through eight years alive on the other end of this. I am grateful.”
When asked if she would endorse any candidate for the upcoming presidential election, she replied: “No, Barack and I are not endorsing in the primary because we want to support whoever wins.
“Let me just say that everyone should be following this election—and every election—very closely. You have to be knowledgeable.”
