Michelle Obama’s thirty-year relationship with ex-President of U.
S.A. Barack Obama was strengthened through marriage counseling.
In Becoming, her best-selling memoir, the fifty-six-year-old lady gets candid about difficulties Barack and she had to face over the years.
Although their commitment to one another has been steadfast since they got married in 1992 in October, their lives turned more complicated as the couple struggled to get pregnant, as well as after the birth of their 2 daughters – Sasha and Malia.
Michelle revealed she went through a miscarriage and had conceived the girls via IVF (in vitro fertilization). After the girls were born, Michelle and Barack had to balance Michelle’s high-powered law career, Barack’s burgeoning career as the politician, along with the stress of becoming new parents.
Now, in her latest Netflix documentary, Becoming, Michelle reflects on the early years of the duo as a couple. She noted that Barack was a lot different and the two had contrasting personalities, which challenged her in different ways.
She said that she knew he was tsunami coming after her and if she did not get her act together, she would have had swept away.
Michelle added that she did not want to be an appendage to her husband’s dreams and so, she made decisions like leaving the law.
Talking about the transitional period in the couple’s relationship, she said that her relationship with her husband was all about their partnership and she knew she had to get herself up if she wanted to possess an equal voice with her very opinionated husband.
She added that things changed after they became parents. She had to give up her dreams and aspirations and not because Barack had asked her but because she could not do all of it together. So, she decided to tone down her aspirations.
Discussing her marriage counseling, she noted that one of the most important things she learned was how to stay happy within the marriage without depending on Barack. She had spoken multiple times about the importance of working upon even the best marriages.
