Nowadays, the major MNCs around the world are coming up with innovative ideas to increase the level of work productivity.
One such instance is Microsoft’s new initiative in introducing a three-day weekend at its Japan branch.
Interestingly, the company has experimented with the much acclaimed “working reform project” giving 2500 employees off on Fridays. Notably, during this time period, the employees also took 26% fewer days off in the month.
Moreover, much of the increase in productivity levels was owed to the alteration in how many meetings were scheduled. With only a mere number of days to complete work in a week, many meetings were terminated. On the other hand, the crucial ones were rescheduled and postponed.
93% of employees reiterated that they liked this kind of schedule. Interestingly, this also implies that Microsoft also has similar plans on the anvil to implement in the next summer. On the contrary, others seemed a bit unhappy.
According to them, it didn’t bring any major changes in productivity levels. However, the numbers of grumpy faces are fewer in numbers.
As Microsoft is a bit different from other big organizations, the employees at the Japan branch felt that this scheme wouldn’t be implemented everywhere in all the centers of Microsoft.
It is also worth noting that the country repeatedly scores towards the bottom when the context is about employee satisfaction.
Being a country which has the world’s largest working hours, overwork has been a subject of debate in Japan. This may be one of the major reasons why Microsoft has launched this initiative in Japan.
This fresh move by Microsoft to increase its productivity levels by giving employees a breather is a welcome sign.
Let’s hope that in future, Microsoft would bring an overhaul in the nation’s work culture.
