The elderly husband and wife who were reported missing over the weekend have been found dead near a trail they went visited for a hike.
Stella and Lee Vigil were a Colorado Springs couple who were reported missing on Friday evening after failing to return from an Edmundson Trailhead hike.
Since the couple failed to come back home by 8.30 in the evening, their family members alerted the authorities of their disappearance, prompting El Paso County Search and Rescue to launch a search mission.
As KKTV reported, the rescuers had come across the couple’s car before locating Lee and Stella’s lifeless bodies near the Woodmen Road trail.
According to the authorities, the couple was found at around 12.30 am, some four hours after they were reported missing. The police have also confirmed the couple had suffered gunshot wounds.
In an update, KKTV explained that the police have on Sunday confirmed that everyone involved in the incident has been identified and that no arrests are expected to be made.
Following the tragic death of the husband and wife who were in their 70s, locals have expressed their concerns over the safety of the hiking area often visited by families and couples.
“Up until today I usually feel pretty good. You have to be a little careful, sometimes there are some sketchy people,” a local named Michael Hollenbeck said in an interview with KRDO. “It’s sad, it’s upsetting, I think I’ve seen them on the trail before.”
Morty Zand, another local who went on a hike in the area on Saturday, added: “I don’t want my wife to come here alone. She always has to come with me from now on, if we come back.”
