Amy Lefevre, a 25-year-old runway model, took matters to her own hands when she refused to wear the monkey costume on a runway show.
The costume comprises overgrown lips and ears, which Amy pointed out to be racist.
Amy is an African-American model and declined to wear the monkey costume on the runway show that took place in New York City on the 7th of February.
The Fashion Institute of Technology conducted the show at Pier 59 Studios in Manhattan.
She immediately blasted at the Institute and called them out for being racist.
In the interview, Amy shared her thoughts by saying that she was completely ready to tell the staff members of the runway show how uncomfortable she felt.
Amy also added that she was told, it was okay to feel uncomfortable for 45 seconds.
Amy had been taking part in the runway shows for four years straight and said that it was one of the most hellish experiences in her career.
The February 7th runway show was conducted to give honor to the 10 FIT alumni of the institute who belonged to the department of fine arts.
The oversized lips and ears were designed by Junkai Huang from China, and he was not aware of the racial connotations in his designs, which might provoke some individuals.
The students of the institute provided information that the problem was already told to the producer of the show, Richard Thornn.
One student also said that they kept telling him that the getup was wrong, but instead of taking care, he screamed at the student. It was a lack of judgment.
Even the show’s director Jonathan Kyle Farmer, a FIT professor was told by some of Amy’s classmates before the show that the costume was an issue, but he declined to do anything to solve the issue.
