Lauren Howard was not anticipating what she found after cutting open a box of juice because it tasted unusual and had strange fragments floating in it.
The 17-year-old discovered a gloopy material, probably a mold growth, inside the box. The gross sight, smell, and taste of what she discovered didn’t let Lauren sleep all night.
The carton of juice that her mother had picked up from ASDA had an expiry date of October 2019 and even the seal was intact when she bought it.

“The only thing I didn’t do was shake it – something my mom always said I should do,” Lauren said.
“I began to pour it into a glass and it was coming out a red, bloody, orange color. I thought it was strange but just put it down to the fact I hadn’t shaken it.
“So I decided to take a sip but something seemed off straight away. It tasted sour and had bits floating in it.”
The taste clearly told that something was not right about the juice so Lauren decided to discard it, draining it down the sink.
It was when she noticed there was something inside the box preventing the juice from coming out. To know what was inside it, Lauren and her mum Tracy, 48, decided to cut the box open.
Lauren said: “Mom took a photo and put it on Facebook because we couldn’t work out what it was, it was so gross. We’ve had guesses from brains to a dead mouse.”
Tracy had bought the $1 juice carton from ASDA a fortnight ago. She made a complaint with the store regarding the incident and the store reimbursed her the full price of the item.
According to Tracy, Lauren has been ‘traumatized by the entire thing.’
She said: “That night she barely slept, and she couldn’t drink anything, she was just retching. She was worried about all drinks and what could be in them, even the tap water.”
“None of our family will be drinking juice from the carton again that’s for sure,” she added.
Following the incident, ASDA apologized for what happened. The retail giant has started an investigation to find the probable cause behind it.
A spokesperson for ASDA said: “We pride ourselves on always offering high quality products to our customers and are very sorry that the carton of juice Ms. Howard purchased seems to have unfortunately been damaged and become moldy.
“We have launched an investigation to understand what could have happened, but can confirm that we have had no other complaints of this nature.
“We have contacted Ms. Howard to apologize and keep her updated with our investigations.”
