On the morning of August 25, 2016, Malissa Sergent Lewis was running late to work.
She took a shortcut through the backroads to her elementary school where she works in Kentucky. It was then and there when Malissa made a completely unexpected, life-changing discovery…
In the middle of the road was a black trash bag! As soon as she made this incredible discovery, Malissa did not hesitate.
She took matters into her own hands.
She whipped out her cellphone, hit record and drove up to the bag. Whatever it was, she was determined to find out. She recalls,
“As I got closer, I realized it was moving…”

Sensing Malissa’s presence, the creature inside the bag started to walk towards her. At this point, it no longer mattered to Malissa if the creature was dangerous or not. She had to help whatever this creature was. She immediately hopped out of the car and tore the bag open.
What Malissa saw left her breathless. She couldn’t believe her eyes!
Inside the bag was an incredibly adorable little puppy—just around 8 weeks old.
As soon as the puppy saw her face, he began to wag his tail as if he knew that now, he was going to be okay. The puppy was wearing a collar with no identification. So, she picked him up and took him to work with her. Later that day, Malissa and her sons took him to a nearby clinic for an examination. He was a healthy boy!
Of course, it is outrageous that anybody would do such a heinous act to a helpless little puppy. Luckily, Animal Control and the Sheriff’s Department are knee deep in investigations trying to find out who committed this horrible act, and why.
In the meantime, Malissa and her sons decided to keep the puppy. They aptly named him Hefty!
“He’s very playful,” told Malissa. She said her sons absolutely love him and he is good natured.

Not only was Malissa brave enough to stop the car and save Hefty but she was the right person to drive by at that very moment. She chose to take a major risk and, in return, received an incredible gift.
Hefty was wearing a collar though, so Malissa couldn’t help but wonder if he had been stolen away from his original owner before he was left on that road in the trash bag. So, as conscientious as she is, she took to Facebook with her video and wrote:
“If this is your puppy, let me know. If you are the scoundrel who put it in a garbage bag and tossed it on the side of the road….you’re a sicko”
