A 20-year-old mother has gone viral after giving birth to her daughter who ‘looks older than her’ after her baby was born with progeria, also called Hutchinson Gilford syndrome.
The new mom welcomed her baby girl into the world but immediately discovered that her child suffers from an extremely rare condition.
The progressive genetic disorder causes children to age quickly, starting in the first two years of their lives.
The mother shared photos of the new member of the family but cruel trolls were quick to mock her child.
According to reports, the new mom gave birth at her home in Libode, a province of the Eastern Cape in South Africa.
Her grandmother tried calling the ambulance when she went into labor but emergency services did not arrive in time.
The baby and the mother were then taken to the hospital where they were told that the child is disabled.
“We were told there that she’s disabled,” the grandmother said to reporters.
“I noticed during her birth that there was something strange with her. She did not cry and she was breathing through her ribs.
“I was shocked because that was strange.
“Now I hear that people are calling her names. That hurts a lot. If I had means, I would put all of them in jail.”
After photos of the baby were shared online, many people commented that she looked like ‘an old woman.’
Individuals with the condition typically succumb to cardiovascular complications in their mid-teens to early twenties.
The underlying cause of the aging associated with Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome is still unknown but some researchers suggest that it is due to cumulative cellular damage.
