If you have siblings, you probably know how much of a pain they can be. You either end up getting bullied by your older siblings or take the heat for the transgressions of your younger siblings. But they’re also a source of fun and joy even long after you’ve all went your separate ways to start your own families.
These are things that children who have no siblings yearn to experience even if they don’t always let their parents know about it. But 6-year-old Mikey was quite vocal about what he wanted. He wanted a baby brother and he made sure to keep letting his parents know about it!
Year after year, Mikey would ask his mom when he was going to have a baby brother.point 172 | But his mom has always had fertility issues so she knew that the chances of making the family bigger were slim.point 263 |
She didn’t want to get her son’s hopes up but neither did she want to deflate his enthusiasm too much so she had to be careful in explaining that he may never get the chance to have a baby brother.point 170 | 1
Of course, that didn’t mean Mikey never got disappointed because he would cry his eyes out whenever his mom told him the reality of the situation. It was difficult for Mikey’s parents but they had to balance being gentle with being realistic.
It didn’t mean that Mikey’s parents never tried but they had accepted the fact that they may always stick to being a family of three. And after a while, sweet Mikey would always find a way to look at the bright side. He even said that since the family had a dog, the pooch could be his younger brother.
Yet Mikey’s pleas were not in vain because out of the blue, his wish was granted. The moment they found out mommy was pregnant was a joyous occasion indeed.
Baby Jake was born 9 weeks early and was a lightweight at only 1.7 pounds but he was definitely Mikey’s younger with both of them sporting the same ginger hair.
After 60 days in the NICU, Jake was finally ready to be taken out of the incubator. Mikey was about to meet his baby brother for the first time and the video perfectly captures that moment.
An obviously elated Mikey was just giggling as the nurses opened up his shirt and instructed him how he should hold Jake. And the sight of them snuggling together is just absolute bliss. Jake even tilts his head upon hearing Mikey’s voice, as if acknowledging that he finally arrived because he heard his older brother’s pleas.
It is hard not to be touched by this sight and hopefully, the two grow up sharing many wonderful memories together.
