In a Facebook post that has since been deleted, a mother issued a warning to all parents about how dangerous bow headbands are to newborns when a friend’s daughter died because she suffocated from it.
In the post, she claimed that the 14-week-old infant suffocated while she was asleep when the over-sized bow slid over her nose and mouth.
The post was quickly shared tens of thousands of times with many parents from around the world have read it. The post particularly took aim at the potential dangers of these “trendy” headbands.
The woman, who supposedly hails from Glasgow, wrote: “All new moms please be aware – this warning is for all moms who have small babies and use the big bow headbands on them.
“My friend has sadly just lost her 14-week-old daughter while she thought she was sleeping in her carry cot after a long walk outside.
“When she came to check on her she had the bow headband down over her nose and mouth and wasn’t moving – she had passed away.
“Her death was due to suffocation asphyxiation.
“She wanted me to share with other new moms the danger of some of these fashion accessories for babies can have.”
The woman added how “utterly devastated” she and her friend was over the infant’s death, who she identified as Holly.
However, the Scottish police have not been able to verify the incident nor the veracity of the post. The woman’s Facebook post has also been deleted.
But even if there are doubts about whether the incident has happened, the dangers do appear to be real. There has been a growing controversy over large hair clip bows called JoJo bows which have become a fashion fad among young girls.
The accessory was popularized by YouTuber and reality TV actress JoJo Siwa, 13, who throughout her childhood regularly appeared on the show Dance Moms. Her bright and bold clips quickly caught the attention of her young fans.
However, these elaborate accessories have already been banned in many schools and the dangers of young children choking on them are real enough.
