Heartbreaking video footage has emerged that shows a mother monkey cradling and kissing her dead baby and refusing to leave its side.
The mother monkey refused to believe that her baby died just two days after birth at a zoo in north-west China.
The mother monkey can be seen cradling and kissing her dead baby in an enclosure at the Xiangyang Zoo in Hubei province.
Zookeepers told Xiangyang Television that the three-year-old monkey gave birth to her baby on May 4 for the first time.
The baby couldn’t survive. But, the mother refused to leave its side.
‘Since then, the mother has been cradling her dead offspring and refusing to let go,’ manager Geng Jianqiao said.
The heartbreaking video was shared online and left people in tears. One person wrote on Chinese microblogging site Weibo: ‘This is the power of a mother’s love.’
‘As a new mother myself, I cried watching them,’ another wrote.
‘Animals are just as sensitive as us humans, if not more,’ the third one said.
‘How come the zoo didn’t take proper care of the baby monkey after it was born?’ one user asked.
‘They should have taken better care of the pregnant monkey. The zoo has done a poor job in managing the incident,’ another added.
