An intelligent monkey has gone viral after shocked zoo visitors caught it on camera sharpening a rock before using it as a tool to smash the window of its enclosure in an attempt to escape.
The incident occurred the Zhengzhou Zoo in Henan Province, China, and quickly went viral with viewers comparing the actions of the monkey to the movie Planet of the Apes.
As the witnesses reported, the little Colombian white-faced capuchin was sharping a rock before using it to crack the window with repeated hits.
After the glass shattered, however, the monkey got scared of the sound and quickly ran away into the opposite direction.
The amazing escape attempt was praised by people from all over the world and viewed over 20 million times since its release.
“The monkey was sharpening the stone, then it started hitting it on the glass. The monkey scared itself away, but it came back to take another look and even touched it,” one of the zoo visitors, Mr. Wang, explained.
“This monkey is unlike other monkeys. This one knows how to use tools to break walnuts,” zookeeper Tian Shuliao added in an interview with local media.
“When we feed walnuts to other monkeys, they only know to bite it.
“But it had never hit the glass before though. This is the first time. It’s toughened glass, so it would never have got out. After it happened, we picked up all the rocks and took away all its ‘weapons.’”
As the staff member ensured, the zoo would immediately replace the window as well as increase patrols to make sure that animals won’t be able to escape their enclosures in the future.
