A mother has been caught on camera abandoning her 5-year-old son with autism after her husband walked out on her and she was left to care for the child alone.
The incident occurred at a KFC restaurant at Hangzhou Train Station in China. The staff found the child, only known as Le Le, sitting alone and eating fries.
As time passed, worried employees alerted the police who discovered who the child’s mother was. In the 5-year-old’s pocket, the cops found a note explaining why the boy was alone.
In the note, the mother attempted to justify her actions by writing that she’s been left unable to take care of the boy after her husband walked out on them.
After the police came in contact with the woman known as Ye, she allegedly told them that “at least he would have food to eat and be found easily.”
In CCTV footage released by Zhejiang News, the mother is seen walking to the dining area with her son. As he passes by her, the mother turns around and walks away.
As the police added in an online statement, the mother claimed to have run into large debts that left her financially, mentally, and physically exhausted.
After finding out that Chinese orphanages would only accept abandoned kids, she decided to let go of her son in order to give him a better life.
As the mother added during a hearing, she makes around $400 per month of which she spends over $300 for the boy’s treatment and daycare fees.
“I thought about it for a long time and this was the only way for both of us to survive. If I lose my job, we will end up starving to death,” she told the police, adding that she’s more than willing to get punished as long as her son survives.
While the authorities continue with the investigation, the 5-year-old has been taken in by Hangzhou Children’s Welfare Institute.
