An upset mom has spoken out about her ordeal after a priest refused to baptize her daughter because of her large birthmark.
As 22-year-old Maria Khvostantseva from Kurgan, Russia, revealed, she wanted to have her then-one-month-old daughter, Vika, baptized in group baptism that took place in her town only for the priest to turn her down because of her baby’s giant birthmark.
“The priest did not want to touch Vika. He said ‘the spot can be contagious and I think our congregation won’t understand this,’” Maria said.
While the priest offered to baptize the 1-month-old in a private ceremony for a fee of $63, the upset mom turned him down and delayed the baptism of her daughter.
“I don’t think it should cost that much to baptize a child. For now, we decided to postpone it,” she previously said.
Following the incident at the church, Kurgan Metropolis slammed the priest’s actions and called them unacceptable.
Since then, the mother also took her little girl to St Petersburg where doctors offered to perform surgery to remove the child’s birthmark free of charge before it could get the chance to turn into a malignant growth.
After the successful surgery, which saw the baby girl’s birthmark partially removed, Maria proudly shared the update on social media only for people to accuse her of seeking attention.
“We are now getting lots of negative comments especially from people that treat abroad, they say that I’m making PR for the clinic and used pictures from another child,” Maria said.
“When your kid has a precancerous condition, you use any option that pops up. We were offered free surgery and of course, we accepted it.”
As the mom added, eights surgeries have been planned, whereas it might take up to three years before her daughter’s giant birthmark will be entirely removed.
