A mother and her boyfriend have been accused of looting a store and stealing equipment worth several hundred dollars in a town that was ravaged by bushfires.
31-year-old Kylie Pobjie and 38-year-old Leon Elton allegedly drove two hours through the smokescreen to loot a Batemans Bay store while people were seeking shelter from the fires.
Following an investigation into the robbing, the police have raided the couple’s home and discovered several electrical “goods worth hundreds of dollars.”
Both individuals were charged with entering a building to commit an indictable offense and theft, whereas Mr. Elton was also charged with the possession of an illegal substance.
As Kylie’s brother claimed after the incident, his sister is a “lovely girl” who must have “lost her way” to commit such crimes.
“Kylie has made her own bed but she’ll come good when she’s ready. She’s a lovely girl but she’s lost her way at the moment,” brother James told the Telegraph.
As a friend of the 38-year-old plumber added, Elton “is a really good person” that has been facing difficulties after losing his home and his car.
“He comes from good stock and is a really good person, but things have gone wrong for him recently,” the source said.
Previously, the NSW Police deputy commissioner addressed potential thieves and warned them against attempting to take advantage of the crisis for their own profit.
“If people want to steal, if people want to skulk around in the fire grounds and get up to mischief, we have a visible police presence and we have police in plain clothes and we have aircraft in the air that are looking over these grounds.
It is quite clear that if people want to behave like that, they will be caught and they will be arrested.
No one will tolerate it,” he told the reporters. What are your thoughts on this story? Let us know in the comments and don’t forget to SHARE this post with your family and friends and follow us on Facebook for more news and stories!
