A man from Michigan has been sentenced to prison after he was caught poisoning Therese Kozlowski, his wife of 22 years.
Brian Kozlowski was sentenced to 60 days in prison after pleading guilty to a felony charge of poisoning. He started adding poison to his wife’s coffee after she filed for divorce last year.
She always felt ill every time he prepared her morning coffee, so she decided to set up cameras in their home. That’s when Therese caught the father of her three children mixing antihistamine medication with her coffee.
Under a plea deal, he managed to avoid a trial where he could have faced up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
Eric Smith, Macomb County Prosecutor, called the 60-day sentence “a slap in the face of the victim.” He said he would appeal the sentence as it was below the sentencing guidelines which specified a guilty defendant should spend at least 19 months in prison.
Smith said in a statement to DailyMail: “The Court seemed more focused on ensuring the defendant’s freedom and ability to continue to work than the victim and her safety.
“It is troubling to think that someone who commits such a reckless crime, putting his wife and so many other people at risk, is able to walk away with such a light sentence.”
Smith also called the man’s actions ‘despicable.’
“We are all thankful this sneak attack didn’t cause the victim to fall asleep behind the wheel on her way to work killing herself and/or innocent drivers.”
Therese Kozlowski delivered an impact statement, describing how she almost fell asleep while driving after drinking the morning coffee prepared by her husband.
Defense lawyer Legghio said that his client was going through an ‘ugly divorce’ and has ‘great profound remorse.’
The last tainted coffee that Kozlowski had made for the victim was analyzed and discovered to contain 127 milliliters of Diphenhydramine, the main component in the allergy medicine Benadryl. The recommended dosage of the drug is between 25 to 50mg.
“I felt a horrible coldness in the air, as if I was hunted by a dangerous predator, but in this nightmare, the predator was Brian,” she expressed. “I felt to my knees and cried.”
