‘My Mother-In-Law Changed My Baby’s Name While I Was Unconscious And Recovering From C-Section’

One of the exciting moments of being pregnant is choosing a name for your bundle of joy.

When selecting a name for the baby, the only two people who should decide on what gets written on the birth certificate are the parents.

However, some relatives can have different views and might try to convince you to pick a different name.

One mother claims her mother-in-law had changed her baby’s name behind her back by convincing her husband to change the spelling of their child’s name on the birth certificate.

In a letter the mother wrote to Care and Feeding, ‘Mama Bear’ said she and her husband picked their baby’s name together.

But two months after she gave birth, she was shocked to learn that her mother-in-law changed the spelling of her child’s name on the birth certificate while she was still unconscious.

The outraged mother wrote: “Dear Care and Feeding, my son is two months old, and I just discovered my husband spelled our son’s middle name as ‘Finlay’ instead of ‘Finley’ on all his legal documentation.

“I, of course, am furious, because I told him I was fine with the middle name, but it had to be spelled Finley – and he agreed before our son was ever born.

“He just let me keep believing for two months that our son’s middle name was spelt Finley when it legally isn’t.”

Mama Bear continued: “He says he regretted it as soon as the card came and has been afraid to tell me. Apparently his mother guilt-tripped him into doing this while I was asleep after my emergency C-section.

“Keep in mind she lives a few states away, so this was all over the phone.

“She tried to convince him to give our son a first name that I very much hated, saying that I would ‘get mad, but get over it’.

“My husband thought changing his first name was too much but apparently gave in to spelling his middle name the way his mum wanted. She thinks that ‘Finlay’ is more masculine that ‘Finley’.”

One person commented: “Moral of the story is to tell your Mother to ‘Mind her own business, it is your child and YOU will name him not her!”

Another wrote: “Blame your husband for being such a wimp, he could have told her and kept his word as she was on the phone not there with him. His fault totally.”

A third added: “She would never see my son if it was me and the husband would be out on his ear of he didn’t back me up.”
