A court ordered the blocking of an international cryobank’s website in Russia after a woman complained that she gave birth to a baby with dwarfism.
The mother in her 40s said that she had chosen the father of her baby by checking his photos and information about genetics on the sperm bank’s website.
She was drawn in by the fact that he was over 6ft. He also has fair hair and has higher education, according to reports.
After choosing the father, she underwent a round of IVF treatment at the private clinic in Moscow.
But a court heard that during the later stages of her pregnancy, doctors discovered that the unborn baby had achondroplasia, a rare and incurable condition that affects 1 in 20,000 children and causes dwarfism.
The disease was confirmed after birth and the mother was told that her child, now 2 years old, would grow to a maximum height of around 4ft. and that his facial features and limbs wouldn’t develop properly.
The unnamed mother has now spoken out about the case to warn other women about possible risks involved with that particular company.
Koptevsky District Court ordered the website of the sperm bank Cryos to be blocked and ruled that using its services would break Russian laws.
Health watchdog Roszdrawnadzor said that it wasn’t satisfied with the details of the case which were provided by the sperm bank, including the analysis of his ‘mental and physical condition,’ a ‘medical genetic examination’ of the donor,’ and a family tree with relatives’ details.
“However, it is not possible to confirm the reliability of the information received,” said the watchdog.
According to the company, it screens donors for 46 of the most common recessive genetic diseases.
The sperm bank told Moskovsky Komsomolets (MK) newspaper that all the semen it supplied was of excellent quality and added that it was ‘not responsible for the mistakes of the clinics’ that carry out IVF treatment.
“We only know that our biomaterial is of high quality,” the sperm bank said to the newspaper.
