A mother tragically passed away in a freak accident after a flying wheel smashed her windshield while she was driving.
The incident took place in New Caney, Texas, where 52-year-old Carol Hardy was on the way home together with her 17-year-old son when a wheel from a pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction became loose and flew off into the direction of the mother’s vehicle.
After the tire crossed the concrete partition separating the northbound and southbound lanes, the wheel struck and smashed Hardy’s windshield.
During the impact, the mother allegedly died instantly, whereas her son, Kayden, was taken to the hospital for a hand injury after the emergency responders arrived at the scene.
Meanwhile, as ABC13 reported, a family of four, including a dad and his three kids, were also taken to a hospital after sustaining minor injuries when Hardy’s car hit the rear of their vehicle.
According to the reports, the 16-year-old driver of the pickup truck with a loose wheel has not been injured. As of this writing, no charges have been filed against the teenager. The deadly accident remains under investigation.
Following Carol’s premature death, Amanda Lewis started a GoFundMe page for the family to help them deal with unexpected hospital and funeral bills.
“While driving home from a baseball tournament in Lufkin, Carol Hardy’s vehicle was struck by a tire that flew off of a truck. Carol did not survive,” the fundraiser reads.
“Kayden survived with minor injuries. Carol was a mother of two, Kayden and Caly and wife to Ron Hardy. She was her kids biggest fan, and quite possibly the nicest person you’ve ever met.
“The family now needs to pay the funeral costs and for the hospital bills. During this difficult time we ask that you give what you can and say a prayer for this family. This is an unexpected loss that has left her family completely heartbroken.”
