Though the boy managed to get to the bus in time, he was struggling to breathe by the time he entered the vehicle and his face mask slipped beneath his nose.

After the unnamed female bus driver scolded Rashad for not wearing the face covering properly, the boy attempted to explain that he’s out of breath because he had to run fast to catch the bus.

The bus driver then allegedly said: “Since George Floyd, that’s what you all say, but I don’t see a knee on your neck.”

After the 11-year-old’s mother, Rose Gabriel, found out what had happened during her son’s trip to the school, she spoke out to WWL and admitted feeling angry over the driver’s words.

“I just started crying. Don’t make him feel inferior. He’s not inferior to nothing,” she said. “He’s equal to any of those students on that bus.”

In addition to the young boy’s allegations, the bus driver’s words were allegedly also caught on the bus camera and noted by other students, prompting the St. Bernard Parish School District to fire the driver.

“I can’t defend that. I don’t condone that. What she said is offensive and inappropriate. It was racially insensitive. And we took appropriate action,” School Superintendent Doris Voitier said of the driver after the latter admitted to making the inappropriate comment.

As for Rashad’s mother, she feels “relieved” that action has been taken and that the bus driver is no longer on the bus with her kid.
