A 27-year-old mother has vowed to never have kids again after her epidural ‘wore off’ during her C-section, leaving her in agonizing pain.
Jodie Marsden was rushed in for an emergency C-section last month and doctors gave her an epidural to mask the pain. It worked at first but it eventually started losing its effectiveness.
When she realized what was happening, she was in so much pain that her screams came out only as whispers.
Jodie told Fabulous Digital: “The whole experience was absolutely terrifying and I am totally traumatised from the birth. I’m never having another baby ever again, that’s for sure.
“It was agony. I could feel them actually pulling my stomach apart as they were ripping the muscles. I was in extreme pain.
“It felt like I was screaming, but my partner said it was only coming out as a whisper. Luckily the doctors could see I was uncomfortable.”
In the last 6 weeks of her pregnancy, Jodie developed high blood pressure or hypertension and was induced and given an epidural on her due date last month.
Despite numerous checks to make sure she was numb before the procedure, the effect of the epidural faded midway through the c-section.
Doctors rushed to give her more pain relief medication after seeing her discomfort. However, she ‘could still feel them inside her body.’
Fearing Jodie might suffer a heart attack or stroke because of her dangerously high blood pressure, doctors put her under general anesthetic after the procedure.
16 hours later, she finally got to hold her baby and she’s now recovering at their home.
Even though she loves being a mother, Jodie said that she has no plans for more kids after her ‘nightmare’ experience.
A spokesperson for Pinderfields Hospital said: “During a c-section under local anaesthetic we advise women they will feel some pressure during the surgery.
“If a woman complains of pain, the surgery is stopped and analgesia (such as Morphine or diamorphine) is given. Anaesthetists cannot administer a spinal block during a c-section but they can top up the epidural.
“If a woman is still not comfortable at this point they will be given a general anaesthetic, however the priority is to get the baby delivered if the uterus is open and cord exposed.
“Where mothers have raised blood pressure it is normal that they would be monitored closely for 12 or more hours following surgery.”
