Having a baby is an emotional experience, one that can encompass extreme joy, anxiety, fear, and intense love.
Having a second baby is typically different. It’s all of those emotions met with familiarity. But having another child brings with it the responsibility of telling the siblings-to-be about the new addition to the family. All change, even positive change, can be overwhelming and ignite a variety of emotions.
Photographer Laura Paulescu has made a career out of documenting these emotions and the intimate family moments that go with them. She concentrates on family building, maternity and labor.

Paulescu recorded images of one mother-daughter pair right before the mother gave birth to another child. She captures the moment of impending change while the daughter is still an only child about to meet her new sibling.
The scene is bittersweet. It acknowledges the bond between the mother and daughter while recognizing the imminent bond between both and the new baby. The young daughter cannot yet know how this will impact her life, but embraces it.
Paulescu not only focuses on parents and their children, but also siblings. Siblings have unique relationships that not even their parents can understand.
These are snapshots that parents and children alike will be able to look back on tenderly. As their relationships shift and change, these photos show where it all began.

But Paulescu doesn’t limit herself to depicting the moments of just human children. She also shows the way families change as they welcome any new member—dogs included.
Paulescu shows us what’s most important in life, family, no matter what your family looks like. If you’re looking for more of her inspiring work, check out her website, Instagram, and Facebook pages.
