The woman who jumped from the roof of a 13-story building with her 5-year-old daughter had been weaning herself from antidepressants.
Her grieving family and friends have revealed that the mother feared she was becoming addicted to drugs.
The devastating incident occurred around 1:30 pm where the mother, identified as Oksana Motyka Patchin, 39, jumped from the rooftop of the building in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen.
Patchin and her young daughter, Olivia, managed to go to the rooftop after she borrowed her friend’s key card so she could ‘show her child the view’ from the top of the building.
In a phone interview with Daily Mail, the friend said that the divorced mother-of-one had been struggling with panic attacks and insomnia.
The friend also said that the mother was diagnosed with clinical depression and was prescribed antidepressants.
But after Patchin started taking medications for her insomnia and depression, she had started having suicidal thoughts. She spent days in a hospital receiving treatment for her mental health in July, the friend said.
The mother-of-one believed that the medications were having adverse effects on her.
“She had a lot of time to process her divorce during the quarantine,” the friend shared. “She must have felt that was the only thing that she could do.”
The friend added: “All that she wanted was to get better… she never wanted to hurt (her daughter).”
She described Patchin as “a very happy person. People were drawn to her.” She also characterized Olivia as a caring and kind girl who was loved by her classmates and teachers.
Police officers rushed to the scene after receiving reports about two bodies on the ground. Patchin and Olivia were found “unconscious and unresponsive with injuries consistent with a fall from an elevated height.”
