Making plans for a wedding can be nerve-wracking and difficult as there are many things to be considered.
But after preparing some plans for their wedding, one groom became so irritated when his mother-in-law started taking over without asking him.
The man took to Reddit and shared how his fiancee’s parents gave them two options: they would give them $20,000 towards a house or they would pay up to $20,000 for their wedding.
Because he already saved some money for a house, the pair said that they would like to use the monetary gift for their wedding.
“Everything was going well until the mother-in-law started going crazy,” he said.
The groom said that his mother-in-law started buying things they did not need or want without asking them.
“Next thing we know, she starts doing the things that we were planning to do: like sampling the food, picking the vendors, etc. My fiancé spoke to her about it and her response was, ‘You weren’t taking care of it, so I had to’ (except we had plans to take care of it),” he shared.
“Now remember when I mentioned that she had been purchasing things we didn’t want for the wedding?” the man continued.
“The next thing that happens is she sends me a list of payments that I’m supposed to take care of: $3,600 in total. $2,000 of which was for the alcohol because she doesn’t drink so she doesn’t think it is necessary (yet a $1,500 carriage ride was).”
The man’s fiancée was also ‘furious’ as her mother splurged so much cash on a carriage ride.
But what pushed their buttons was when the mother-in-law decided to just postpone the wedding due to the pandemic.
The pair then told her that they were “absolutely having the wedding, regardless of COVID” as the date had already been postponed again.
Because the couple had a small wedding ceremony during the pandemic, they had decided to cancel their big wedding.
But the mother-in-law said she would only give them $5,000 instead of the original $20,000 gift if they cancel the big wedding, so the bride decided to wait until 2022.
“We will have been married for two years when this ‘wedding’ happens,” the man added.
Internet users were shocked by the mother-in-law’s actions and urged the pair not to accept the monetary gift.
“Ugh at this point I would just let it go and not even bother. It’s not even your wedding, MIL has planned her own event and you’re just special guests,” one commented.
“Advice: never accept money from anyone blinding thinking there are no strings attached,” another wrote.
“Calling it now, MIL will show up to the wedding in a white dress. 100 per cent,” a third added.
