Sarah Cowan was 30 weeks pregnant when she was 19 in November 2014. After being sick for days, she went to the maternity unit at Crosshouse Hospital near Kilmarnock and the medics did all the tests.

She was told she had a kidney infection and was sent home with antibiotics.

When her condition didn’t change, she went again to the hospital after four weeks and was told she had severe signs of pre-eclampsia and her vitals were in a bad condition.

On December 22, 2014, Sarah had to deliver her son, Kamden and she was then told her baby was dead.

Later, she learned it was medics fault and they should have kept her in the hospital but they ignored early signs of septicemia.

Sarah, who is now 25, is scared of getting pregnant again after the heartbreaking incident.

She said: “I am too scared to get pregnant in case the same thing happens again and I have to go back to that hospital. Eventually, I will want to have more children but not any time soon.”

After five years, the health board finally accepted that the death of Sarah’s baby could have been avoided if the doctors had not ignored the early signs of septicemia.

The mother then received a settlement of £12,000 compensation for her loss.
