A brave mother-of-three has had her entire nose removed after aggressive tumors blocked her nostrils and left her fighting for her life.
40-year-old Julia Davey from England was confronted by a shocking diagnosis when she first visited her doctor to complain about nose pain back in 2019.
While the mother initially believed her condition was nothing serious, the tests revealed that she was suffering from an aggressive form of squamous cell carcinoma, an otherwise common form of skin cancer.
To stop the tumors from spreading, Davey has had her entire nose surgically removed, leaving behind what she describes as a ‘hole’.
Despite still undergoing immunotherapy in an attempt to fight the remaining cancerous growths, the brave mom refuses to give up for the sake of her children and her 44-year-old partner, Nick Stoodley, whom she is determined to marry.
“I feel like I’ve had my whole world tipped upside down this past year. At the end of the day, my goal is to be a mum to my children and a wife to Nick, who proposed just before I started treatment. I will do anything to make that happen,” Julia expressed.
“(…) Nick and I were hoping to get married in 2021, but we’ve decided to bring things forward. It will be an intimate celebration with our nearest and dearest.”
As the 40-year-old explained, she initially had her septum removed, believing that this would allow her to resume her life. Just a month after the removal of cancerous growths, however, another aggressive tumor had taken over Julia’s nose.
In an attempt to avoid removing the entire nose, the doctors decided to put Julia on chemotherapy and see how the growth would react.
Instead of shrinking, the tumor continued to grow until Julia’s nose tripled in size, and the doctors were forced to remove it in a bid to save her life.
“I certainly wasn’t prepared for the new reality of my life, but the first thing that crossed my mind was, ‘I’m not in pain anymore,’” the mother recalled thinking following the 14-hour surgery during which her entire nose was removed.
“To look at, it was like I’d been in a car accident, but I didn’t feel like my entire head was going to explode anymore.”
Speaking of the ‘hole’ left behind after the surgery, Julia said she doesn’t want her kids to see it because she doesn’t “want them to have nightmares.”
Following a peaceful Christmas, the mother was told all traces of cancer had been removed from her nasal cavity. She also underwent six weeks of radiotherapy in hopes of finally being declared cancer-free.
Unfortunately, however, an MRI scan Julia had in April revealed that another cancerous growth appeared in her jaw.
Following the removal of the tumor, and a part of her jaw, the doctors found yet another growth. This time, the tumor is located deep inside her nasal cavity and allegedly “too close to important nerves” and the brain for doctors to physically remove it.
Nevertheless, Julia, who is still waiting for a prognosis, remains positive and hopes that immunotherapy she’s undergoing will help her recover.
“The immunotherapy should shut down the tumor and stop any further growth, making it manageable,” the mom concluded with a positive attitude.
“My drive is being a mum and I’ve got to stay positive. It can feel like I’m fighting against the tide, but I need this treatment to work.”
