The many dishes that have pork as an ingredient represent the limit of what a lot of people know of pork. But when you have a delicious roast pork belly right in front of you, it’s understandable that you don’t want to think of everything that had to happen to get that piece of pork on your plate.
While it’s ideal for people to go vegan (it’s not only good for the health and more compassionate for the animals, it can even help fight climate change), there are many practical reasons why people still choose to eat meat. For one, in some regions, meat products are actually cheap and if you’re barely making ends meet then having meat as part of your diet is the only practical choice.
However, it’s also good to acknowledge that because of the huge demand for meat in the market, a lot of commercial farms try to increase productivity in practically cruel ways and farm animals in these operations often have to live in abysmal conditions only to be slaughtered at the end.
One thing about pigs, though, is that they are also intelligent animals who also know how to display emotion. If they can frolic and have fun, then they can also experience sorrow when they’re forced to live in a cage barely big enough to let them sleep or see their companions dragged away and never to be seen again.
But there are some organizations who work towards saving even a fraction of these poor creatures. Two of these organizations are Viva! and Dean Farm Animal Sanctuary and they released a clip of a rescued mother pig and her piglets that are sure to touch the heart.
Hope Apple Blossom and her offspring were rescued from a slaughterhouse. After giving them some time to recoup their strength, they were finally allowed to go outside for the first time. Having spent the entirety of her life up to that point just hemmed in, the mother pig was understandably reluctant to step out although her piglets were more adventurous.
But when the mother pig finally went out, the way she ran and frolicked clearly communicated the joy she felt at finally being free to enjoy life with her piglets.point 240 |
The little piggies would run around and then go back to their mother then run around again just exploring the wide-open field.point 105 | It’s what you would expect from any mother and her children who are enjoying some relaxing time.point 191 | 1
Seeing Hope Apple Blossom and her piglets, it’s hard not to think about what would have happened if they weren’t rescued. And for those who were left behind, well, it’s certainly something to think about the next time you order a pork dish.
