38-year-old Kate Scottow has been charged with trolling after she called a transgender woman a man on Twitter.
Boris Johnson criticized the action as an “abuse of manpower and police facilities” when the mother-of-two was arrested.
Mrs. Scottow will now face magistrates on charges of making malicious communications over social media comments about Stephanie Hayden, a trans campaigner.
The Crown Prosecution Service said the mother had been charged over ‘persistent’ messages to cause ‘annoyance, inconvenience or needless anxiety’ to another person.
Mrs. Scottow has been arrested by three officers at her home as her 10-year-old toddler and 20-month-old son watched.
The mother was taken to a police station where she was detained in a cell for 7 hours before being interrogated.
After details of the mother’s case were revealed, Mr. Johnson criticized the move. He asked: “Is this really the right way to fight crime? Is this what our brave police officers signed up to do?
“Are you really telling me that it is a sensible ordering of priorities, when violence on the streets would seem to be getting out of control?”
A CPS spokesperson said the charge against the mother had been authorized on August 21 “after reviewing a file of evidence from Hertfordshire Police relating to social media posts.”
Mrs. Scottow is due to appear at Stevenage Magistrates’ Court next month.
The mother’s case comes 6 months after UK’s first trans hate crime prosecution was postponed by a judge who said: “There is no case and never was a case.”
