Kerry Block and her husband Robert had never heard their son speak until last month.
Their son, David, arrived in their lives after they were told that Kerry would never be able to bear a child. But at the age of 40, she gave birth to their son.
David was around 4 when he started showing signs of severe autism.
In an interview with BuzzFeed News, Kerry said: “He was fine and then he just kind of lost it all.”
David stopped talking and he only speaks in single words. He can also go on weeks without saying anything.
“My husband and I, we don’t really know what happened,” Kerry expressed, “and honestly we don’t care what happened. It’s water under the bridge and we’re just moving forward and trying to give him the best life possible. That’s all that matters.”
In addition, David developed a severe immunodeficiency disorder and he had to be isolated from other children. Kerry watches over him 24/7, calling her son her best friend.
But she knows David is still sad and it breaks her heart.
“He wants friends badly. He’s home-schooled, and it’s just the three of us,” Kerry said. “I know he’s lonely and he wants friends.”
Last week, David asked her his first-ever question: “Would someone like me?”
Kerry wanted to be happy that her son finally expressed a question but the thought of him wondering if someone would like him was breaking her heart more.
“I had to go off and cry when he didn’t see me because it’s just kind of bittersweet that he’s trapped in there,” she expressed. “He does want to be liked, and he does want friends, and he doesn’t know how to make them.”
Kerry told David that both she and his father liked and loved him. She also explained that his late grandmother, God and Jesus liked him too.
“And I said, ‘I’m sure anybody that met you would like you.’”
Kerry shared her son’s question on social media and it quickly went viral. People immediately showed their love and support.
