One woman was over the moon when she fell pregnant with her son Noah. Her excitement immediately doubled when she conceived again three weeks later in an incredibly rare phenomenon called ‘superfetation’.
39-year-old Rebecca Roberts was stunned when she discovered that she was expecting two babies as earlier scans did not show any signs of a second baby.
“I didn’t even know it was possible to conceive again while pregnant,” Miss Roberts expressed.
Miss Roberts, who also has a 14-year-old daughter, had tests to rule out genetic or chromosomal reasons.
She and her partner, 43-year-old Rhys Weaver, have been told that a fertility drug she was taking may have caused her to release an egg even though she was already pregnant.
According to Healthline, superfetation is extremely rare. This phenomenon happens when a second pregnancy occurs during an initial pregnancy.
Babies born from superfetation are usually considered twins as they may be born on the same day.
There are only a few cases of superfetation in humans and most cases occurred in women undergoing fertility treatments, such as IVF.
Miss Roberts’ miracle twins were delivered at 33 weeks via c-section due to a problem with baby Rosalie’s umbilical cord. She weighed only 2lb 7oz while her brother Noah weighed 4lb 10oz.
Rosalie was discharged from the hospital almost three months after her brother.
