A mother and her 15-year-old daughter were turned away on the day of enrollment at a Texas high school after the institution’s administrators told the mum her T-shirt dress was “too short” for their dress code.
According to Joselyn Lewis, the teen’s mum, both of them were turned away from Madison High School in Houston not only because of her “short” dress but also due to her headscarf.
While the mother initially thought the school refused to let her enter because she was mistaken for a student, she got shocked when the administrators told her that students, as well as parents, have to follow their dress code if they wish to enter.
“She went on to say that she still couldn’t let me on the premises because I was not in dress code and I still didn’t understand what that meant,” Joselyn explained.
“She said that my head scarf was out of dress code and my dress was too short.”
As the mother added, she attempted to register her 15-year-old daughter into a new school after un-enrolling her from Lamar High School due to continuous issues with bullying.
“When I went to Lamar, I had no problems, but when I got to Madison High School, they refused me access to the premises because of what I had on,” Lewis recalled.
“I mean, I didn’t understand why my headscarf and my dress would conflict with me enrolling someone in school.”
After refusing to leave the premises, the school’s staff called the police who escorted the mother off the school grounds.
“I can wear what I want to wear. I don’t have to get all dolled up to enroll her to school,” Joselyn added.
“My child’s education, anyone’s child’s education should be more important than what someone has on, that shouldn’t matter.”
While there is no dress code for parents available on the school’s webpage, Lewis decided to come back in different clothes to get her daughter registered.
