A furious mother confronted a school after her son wit ADHD was reduced to tears when he received a ‘most likely to be distracted’ award in front of his classmates.
Tera Cooper said her son, Derek Cooper, was so embarrassed after receiving the award with words ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) award ‘Most likely to be distracted by… look something shiny!’
The award was also accompanied by a photo of a zombie being carried by a red balloon.
Mrs. Cooper said she would take legal action against the school in Connecticut.
She told NBC: “He had tears in his eyes. He’s embarrassed because he had to accept it in front of his entire class.”
Aside from the ‘most likely to be distracted’ award, Derek also received another award titled ‘#BermudaTriangle’ which described him as the most likely to borrow an item and never return it to the owner.
Mrs. Cooper said the teacher and the school know about her son’s condition as he was included on a plan that could allow changes in the education program.
“I don’t know if she thought it was funny but it’s not funny. She’s the teacher. It’s supposed to be a safe space,” Mrs. Cooper said.
She also said that Derek’s classmates also received ADD awards.
The school principal told parents that the issue would be taken care of. “Parents were assured that, along with our central office administration, this matter would be handled promptly as we are acting on good faith in the interest of the student and his family,” he said.
The school superintendent also said: “Our effort to respond immediately and follow up is certainly evidence that we as a district and personally take such matters seriously.”
